About the author: Charles A. Eastman, a Wahpeton Dakota born in 1858, worked as a doctor on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and later wrote about his life and the stories he remembered. Susan Turnbull is an award-winning illustrator and artist from Rapid City, South Dakota. She studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and has illustrated several other books.
