The South Dakota State Capitol: The First Century (2008), written by Marshall M. Damgaard and published by the South Dakota Historical Society Press, is a comprehensive 146-page hardcover book detailing the history, architecture, and restoration of the Capitol building in Pierre. It covers the building's construction from 1905–1910 and its enduring legacy, often regarded as one of the best books on any U.S. state capitol.

About the author: Born and raised in South Dakota, Marshall Damgaard served for many years in the state's political arena, including periods as both an aide and chief of staff to Governor William Janklow.

Image description: The cover illustration displays the top of the South Dakota State Capitol above a landscape filled with dense trees in vivid autumn colors, including the shades of orange, gold, and green, with a hillside in the background. The title and author's name are printed in white letters, in the left top corner of the cover.
