The Land Along the River: The Ongoing Saga of the Sioux Nation Land Claim 1851-2012 by Peter Capossela

Capossela's new book pulls the reader along on a journey through 150 years of Treaty Violations. He challenges us like a mystery writer to see whether, in the enlightened times of the late 20th century, legal and moral or Political corruption, racism and green will once again determine the outcome of a modern battle set between Tribal Nations, and Anglo interest. He takes us on a voyage, rich in its story of courage, idealism and human nature, between Traditional Lakota and those who would side with the white politicians, splitting tribal self-interest from Lakota Unity.

About the author: Peter is an attorney based in Eugene, Oregon, who has been working in the field of Federal Indian law for 35 years. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon and the University of Oregon School of Law. Capossela’s practice focuses on assisting Tribes and Tribal organizations on environmental and water law matters, including issues ranging from large-scale water diversions in Nevada, to the protection of Native burials along the Missouri River. Capossela has also written extensively on Native Treaty rights. He is the author of The Land Along the River: The Ongoing Saga of the Sioux Nation Land Claim, 1851-2012 (Mariah Press), as well as several legal articles on Indian water rights. His pro bono work has also been prolific, on rural Reservations and, more recently, with refugee families that have resettled in the US. He lives with his partner, Joni Tobacco, and their two younger kids, Nettie and Emmett.
