About the author: Charles L. Woodard is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at South Dakota State University, where he taught American literature with special emphasis on American Indian literature, regional writing, and peace and conflict studies. He has written and edited several works exploring community, culture, and regional identity in the Upper Midwest—including Peril and Promise: Essays on Community in South Dakota and Beyond—and helped develop literary and cultural programs at the university.
