About the author: Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957) was 65 when the first of her Little House series of the American frontier was published in 1932. "Mrs. Wilder has caught the very essence of pioneer life," said a critic of her account of family life in the 1870s and 1880s. Laura's sudden appearance in the literary field, well past middle age, seemed as amazing as her ability to write lively stories of western settlers. Few knew that Laura Ingalls Wilder was a lifelong writer, with a large body of occasional writings and country journalism behind her. From girlhood poetry written by the light of a kerosene lamp, to a recurrent column in The Missouri Ruralist, Laura found her writing voice. In A Laura Ingalls Wilder Reader readers experience not only these long-lost writings by the pioneer girl, but those of her family as well. Here are poems, histories, and essays by Laura's parents and siblings, and the vigorous prose of her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane. This collection revisits the people and places beloved by generations of readers.
